The Doula Difference: increased confidence

“The feeling of strength and empowerment that comes from a birth where the birthing person says ‘I did it’ is unlike any other.”

In my last blog post, I talked about the beauty of a birth where the birthing person feels strong and empowered. This can happen in any circumstance, with any type of birth. It can (and does) even happen when the birth plan goes out the window and the unexpected happens. How can this be?

Doula support traditionally consists of three things: physical, emotional and informational support (some would also add advocacy to that list). The ‘magic’ of doula work, however, happens because a doula doesn’t just provide those key elements in her support – she offers a personal connection along with them. And it’s in that relationship, in the sense of being deeply cared for, and in the indefinable essence of combining knowledge and love that the wonderful benefit of increased confidence is created.

A client’s confidence can carry her through the unexpected in a labour, results in more satisfaction with the birth experience, and can help with bonding and breastfeeding after the baby is born. More than that, the difference a doula makes – the indefinable creation of confidence through caring support that is somehow more than the sum of its parts – also carries over to the birthing person’s life with a newborn and in parenting.

Increased confidence is just one of the benefits of doula support that is essential during labour and birth, but that also continues long after pregnancy and labour are over. Doula support is a beautiful, healthful addition to labour and birth. Unfortunately, it is still often unfamiliar, misunderstood or unrecognized – or considered an expensive ‘extra’. But what price do we put on a healthier outcome that benefits not just the birthing person, but her baby, partner, family and community as well?

Have you considered doula support for your pregnancy and birth? I can confidently say that it’s well worth it! If you live in the Greater Sudbury area, including French River, St. Charles, Markstay-Warren and Espanola, I would love to meet with you to discuss how my support could work for you.
