The Doula Difference: breastfeeding

In these late days of fall, where we know that winter is just around the corner, a cup of apple spice tea is the perfect way to unwind for a few moments! And if you’re like most of us, you can use some time to relax – maybe even more than usual – because of added stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Doula work has gotten harder all over the province, too, as hospitals and birthing centres limit the number of people allowed to be present during labour. However, that hasn’t stopped me, and other birth support workers, from doing all that we can to help our clients achieve their best birth experiences. One reason for this is the passion and belief that we have for the difference that having a doula can make.

Did you know, one way that doulas make a difference is in breastfeeding outcomes? If you have a doula you are more likely to still be breastfeeding your newborn at six weeks (and, I’m guessing, beyond). This is a beautiful birth outcome that can be explained by a number of things…

A doula-supported labour leads to higher levels of oxytocin being present in your body, which not only helps with labour but also facilitates breastfeeding AND promotes bonding with your baby!

Having a doula also means you are more likely to be satisfied with your labour and feel more confident after your birth experience. This means you are more likely to breastfeed successfully in the early days of your newborn’s life, which can lead to continued success moving forward.

And, finally, a doula can follow up with you after the birth and provide you with support and resources if you have any questions or concerns in the early days of navigating life with baby and learning a new skill.

Can you think of other reasons why having a doula helped you breastfeed your newborn? I’d love to hear!
